Aperol, long-running undisputed king of Italian aperitif
Aperol is one of, if not THE, most popular aperitif drink in Italy
With its unique taste, bitter and sweet at the same time, seducing bright orange colour and a solid brand tradition behind it, its popularity is hardly ever going to dimish. Not in the nearest future anyway!
Let’s get to know this delicious drink better – a bit of background history.
Aperol, as everyone of you probably knows, is a liquor of a very distinctive an orange-red colour invented by the Barbieri brothers back in 1919 and presented at the Padua International Fair. The Spritz itself instead was born a bit later, in 1950, as a twist on the traditional Venetian drink the White Wine Spritzer. Also, the word spritz refers, as the drink above suggests, to an old practice (probably of german origin) of adding soda to wines to make them lighter, because supposedly Italian wines were a bit too strong.
The recipe of the Aperol is a secret well kept and we will probably never know what it is really made of. Some have guessed the presence of orange, rhubarb and herbs…but which ones? A mistery.
What we know, though, is the recipe and the quantities to make the perfect Aperol Spritz!
One of the main ingredients of is Prosecco, not your classical wine, because of the bubbles, but nonetheless a delicious wine indeed. Its flavour and composition create magic when mixed with Aperol and Soda. Here’s the official quantities:
3 parts of PROSECCO
2 parts of APEROL
1 part of SODA
… and a slice of orange as decoration! ?
The alcoholic percentage of this drink is low, and that is truly what makes if perfect for an aperitivo, the Italian way. We love to take things slowly and enjoy ourselves with friends over some nibbles and a refreshing drink winding down after a day of work or to enjoy the sunset of a beautiful summer evening at the beach.
