Orvieto Amabile, the wine of noble Romans and Popes.
Orvieto is one of the most famous Italian wines, not in Italy alone, but all around the world. It is also one of the most ancient wines that we know of, with traces of production dating back to the Roman age, especially by the Etruscan population.
This sweet wine was already appreciated by noble Roman families, but it was during the middle ages, when the city of Orvieto became one of the many papal properties, that this wine variety started to become popular amongst another wealthy category of people, Popes.
The golden abboccato (a specific term in the wine lingo that indicates the sweetness of the said wine, ranging from medium sweet to medium dry) was renamed the ‘the Pope’s Wine’ for that reason and later on it has also been defined “Il sole d’Italia in bottiglia” (Italian sun in a bottle) by Giovanni D’Annunzio (famous Italian author and poet) himself.
As time passes Orvieto wines have adapted to the changing of trends and have acquired the characteristics of dry wines with a unique clean crisp peachy flavour, with occasional hints of white flowers and green and golden apples.
