The northern regions of Italy tend to get relatively cool compared to the rest of the country, the two coasts of Italy experience different climates in winter time, with the west coast wetter and warmer, while the east colder and drier. In winter, the eastern coast of Italy tends to be harsh with cold, but with bright blue skies. Italy adapts dishes depending on the weather and climate, due to the available produce. Here we have some of our favourite Italian dishes that will keep you warm this winter…
Zuppa del Giorno
Soup is the go-to winter dish, almost everyone reaches for a bowl of steaming hot soup when it’s below freezing outside – immediately warming us up, while still leaving room for the meal ahead. Lentils are a typical winter ingredient, great for hearty hot soups! Here at Antico, we sometimes use them as ingredients for our Zuppa del Giorno – the special soup of the day on the A-la-carte menu.
La Lasagna Classica alla Bolognese
Traditionally, Bolognese sauce requires a slow cook for the perfect caramelisation of its ingredients, which include; onion, celery, and carrot, along with beef, veal, red wine, and tomatoes. Simmered over low heat, Bolognese becomes a thick, hearty sauce.
Cannelloni Ricotta e Spinaci
An Italian classic! Fresh pasta tubes filled with a ricotta and spinach mixture and baked in a tomato and béchamel sauce. This is a customer favourite in the winter time, it’s such a filling dish designed to make you feel warm during the colder months.
Parmigiana
A personal favourite of ours… Parmigiana! Quintessentially Italian and perfect for the colder months of the year. However, even if you’re reading this blog and it’s not winter, you can still enjoy this dish all year round and in every season!
